Ranking the planeswalkers 70-61

Man oh man, I thought for sure the first 12 entries into the worst walkers in EDH would be safe. Some of you guys did not like me tearing into your babies...Well I'm gonna.

In all seriousness I sorta want people to disagree. I want to encourage open discussion with you guys AND with that I want to include something sweet after I finish this list. Something that I want you all to take part of. Every time someone thinks I'm wrong and inputs their own opinion it starts a discussion. Sure we may not agree but that is totally OK.

I can tell you right now I only play competitive EDH. Combos and lock down are my bread and butter so naturally a massive amount of planeswalkers will not make the cut. The difference between placement with who makes 74th and 64th may actually not be a huge difference. I'm thinking that the lower the score the less competitive the group is. I hope this makes sense to you guys and brings some light into how I'm viewing this.

Anyway, enough of this, lets go tear some more planeswalker ass...That came out weird.

70: Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh
And speaking of ass we have the worst flip walker. Let's start with the creature side. We have a 2/2 for 3 mana. Not really exciting. Once someone takes 3 damage you can flip her and... We have another Nalaar.
Generic plus to damage a player, and minus to damage a creature (Barely mind you).
The ultimate is unique and frankly the only reason she didn't appear on the last list. However if you have her flip and live long enough to ult you're killing your opponents over a period of many many turns. But there are far faster and better routes to do this.

Score: 5/100

Played in: Mono Red Burn but not really

69: Sarkhan Vol
Sarkhan is here yet again with Vol. There can be some debate on him being higher or lower on the list depending on your playstyle but I don't really feel like he has much of a home. Compared to other planeswalkers that pump up creatures he only does it for the turn. Haste is great when you're in those colors but I feel like simply ramping and playing something more threatening the following turn will swing the game more in your face than Sarkhan ever could.

Score: 5.5/100

Played in: Mono black discard so you have something to discard

68: Ajani, Mentor of Heroes
Poor Ajani has recently been kicked into the Superfriends role and while he has some use there and can ultimate the same turn thanks to doubling season I don't feel like the 5 mana investment is worth while. Lets start with first ability. You can put 3 counters on a threat like Ghave or Atraxa, seems ok but he is already depending on you having a decent boardstate. Granted you can always dig with his second ability to find a creature, aura, or walker but paying 5 mana for an Anticipate like effect still seems like too much of a stretch.
Also his ultimate is boring. It's not terrible in a group where people win via combat damage but I want a little more from an ultimate. They're supposed to be massively game changing effects and just gaining a ton of life seems real dull. Don't even get me started on how little that would matter in a combo meta

Score 6/100

Played in: Decks that adore +1 counters and superfriends

67: Ajani Steadfast

How is this above Mentor of Heroes?! He just adds one counter instead of three! Nevermind that he gives other abilities.

Well he's not much better honestly but he could have room in Atraxa and other Superfriends decks on top of that. He's another Ajani that can't protect himself and depends on you having a board state already to do anything. Yes his plus is decent in counter based decks like Atraxa, Ghave, Anafenza and whatnot but I don't feel like that's quite enough. The minus is good in a Superfriends deck as well but that still doesn't stop Ajani from being fairly niche.

However the ultimate negating all damage except for one is terrible. You could argue that now it's far harder to kill you but plenty of decent decks will ways to kill outside of damage and it's not difficult to press the oops I win button in commander with combos or lockdown.

Score: See above/100

Played in: See above

66: Sorin, Solemn Visitor
Speaking of cards that depend on others to stay alive, we have Sorin with his useless plus one that does nothing unless you have a board state. His minus can be done twice before he dies but now you have two fliers for 4 mana. That's just not good enough. You could argue that you minus him first to make a blocker and keep it a 3/2 until your next turn but is that enough for turn 4/5 with opponents starting to ramp into bigger threats like Terastodon or Ulamog? Suddenly Sorin is gone and you don't really have much to show for it. The low impact here is what hurts him the most

Score: 6/100

Played in: Edward VS Jacob duel decks

65: Sorin, Grim Nemesis
Oh man... This entry is not kind to Sorin...
This guy seems a little better. He draws you cards and can protect himself kinda but he's 6 fucking mana. You wanna know what else is 6 fucking mana? Con Sphinx and Ad Naseum. AND you have mana left over,  Dig through Time with 2 delve. You wanna know why its hard to list cards on this? Because 6 drops that don't either end the game or bring you closer to winning are terrible.

Score 6 drop/100

Played in: Your 10 year old cousins deck with an average cmc of 12

64: Ajani, Caller of the Pride
Ajani is just like Sorin here where almost every version of him is super niche in commander. We have another one that depends on you having a boardstate to even do anything. Pumping him out early is a no go since you'll have just 1 creature to plus while your opponents should have 2/3 among them. Good luck protecting him for long when your 2/2 Sanctuary Cat doesn't do the trick.
His ult is neat because it's actually possible to get to since he can come down early but 40 + 2/2 cats doesn't do a whole lot to end the game. I say this because while you're pumping up the jam and ready to climax kitties, your opponents have plenty of time to find that Cyclonc Rift or Toxic Deluge to stop this. They're not attacking Ajani because it's not a threat and when he ultimates and you vomit out your 2/2 tokens on the board it won't impact a thing.

Score: 6/100
Played in: Standard 2014 (Probably not)

63: Kytheon, Hero of Akros
I don't know if you guys can tell but I don't like aggro in commander. I'm not sure if my tangents on why it's bad and slow and dumb are enough but I'll let you know that Kytheon...isn't terrible. I know! Crazy right? But he flips into another shit walker. He would be higher on the list if the flip wasn't mandatory and may even be playable in some builds. When you flip to Beefslab you have another Jura on your hands but thankfully he can kinda protect himself by making something indestructible. Is that good enough? No.

Score 8/100
Played in: White weenie turn things sideways decks

62: Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver
I do not understand why this guy is beloved. I'm actually somewhat hesitant to put her so low because people like the character but... Fuck it. This is my list and I'm sure none of you know where I live.
Ashiok is cool, interesting, and I hope we see more soon. Just not like this. You have yet another walker that doesn't protect himself. You could exile someone into something you can steal but that takes 2 turns and is also a gamble. The ultimate is brutal however with the previous problems of not being able to protect herself without a gamble makes this super unlikely to never actually happen
Cool card...but not quite good enough

Score 9/100

Played in: Blue black exile like Circu

61: Sarkhan the Mad

And the last target on my list today is Sarkhan the Mad. What makes him better than the rest? Well...he has a Dark Confidant ability... That's about it. Throw him in a rakdos deck with a decently low curve and he can draw you some cards. Also he can pump up your own guy into a 5/5 dragon or demote an opponents creature into a 5/5 dragon. I don't think he's good by any stretch but if you lowered his cmc to 3 I think he could actually be playable somewhere. But not really.

Score: 10/100

Played in: Rakdos decks that can't afford Dark Confidant, or Dark Tutelage, or greed, or Phyrexian Arena, or Necropotence....oh jesus...nevermind he sucks .

Well there you have it for today.
Thoughts? Am I ruining your favorite cards? Am I being too critical?
Let me know what you think about these folks and if you play them in anything.

  1. Caller of the Pride did actually see a bit of Standard play, for a time. His minus ability being the main reason. Everywhere else, yeah, he's awful.

And I'm totally with you on Ashiok. I have no idea why people like her in edh, she's not good.

  3. After you eat all your kobolds, and after you berzerk, but before the end of the turn, Sarkhan the Mad's -4 is a great little "Oh by the way" for the next target on Prossh's list. It's not commander damage but its still good. I've won a few games like that.

  4. Caller and ashiok can be set up. Especially ashiok.

That being said, they are still not top tier, and watch out before SJWs call you out on calling ashiok a dude.

    1. Ashiok is a total dude. She Always has come off like that. His demeaner and her attitude have made that clear.

  5. Disappointing list. Not because I necessarily disagree, but just because it was like it was just a list of all of the Sorin , Ajani, and Sarkhan cards. Not really wrong....just boring....More tomorrow?

    1. More soon. Sorry it's disappointing but it mostly feels like wizards prints certain walkers mostly for constructed. Sorin, sarkhan, Ajani, and Beefslab all fall into that a ton

  6. I think your competitive preferences were pretty obvious in the write-ups of the first batch, but can't hurt to have it as the lead for the continued updates. I don't really have any good arguments against most of the placements here, because I mostly agree with the point that the planeswalker needs to protect itself, or at least have an ability you can use right away to get real value. I am interested to see where someone like Liliana of the Dark Realms slots in for you.

    1. Lili of the realms is in the top half for sure.

  7. Ah poor flip Chandra. I'd honestly rate her a bit higher since she can be a commander in a color where generally the best commanders are creature heavy or heartless. She isn't terrible if you wanna head a spell heavy monored and can stick as a commander if you're wrathing a bunch. I'd say the say about Kytheon as well.

As long as you're in a meta where aggro is fine all the flip walkers are very viable to get access to walkers in the command zone. So on that I think you should have scored them based on being in the 99 or the commander because both are Kytheon and baby chandra are way better in the later position.
