One thing to note is I'm skipping Aether Revolts walkers because they're not out yet but from what I've seen none of them will impact the higher parts of the list where it matters so eh.
Also the Magic Origins Flip Walkers count here too. I will be looking at them as creatures/walkers.
And finally the planeswalkers that can also be generals will have that taken into value as well.
Cue that intro!
Today I'm gonna hurt some feelings and let you guys know the 12 WORST walkers in EDH. A lot of the things I'll be writing up is jokes because these cards are jokes.
These guys will include a score out of 100 and what you could do with them
Now all of this is subjective and hopefully I won't be telling you guys too much that your kids are bad. I'm hoping this because no one in their own right mind should be playing the cards on this list. Sure you can throw them in your tribal kill myself first deck but honestly the ones I'm listing today make me sad and hopefully make you sad too. Lets start at 82 with the absolute worst walker....ever
82: Tibbers....
Sigh....while I don't like being predictable and the rest of the cards on this list are shit I can maybe find spots for them in the most dedicated of decks....Tibbers....well...
He can't protect himself
His plus may actually hurt you
His minus 4 is just a direct damage thing. In commander who cares about that.
And his ult is will never happen because he's gonna die to the combo player or lockdown player before it's ever relevant.
I honestly don't even think Insurrection is a good card since some of the best decks don't even use that many creatures and stealing them for one turn to do some damage isn't gonna win games.
Tibbers: 0/100
Best place for Tibbers:
Selling him for a Soda
81: Nissa Revane
You could make the argument that Nissa was made in a time where EDH wasn't as popular. But you shouldn't.
Nissa's Plus doesn't even work more than once
Here second plus gains life for elfs (Whoopie). In a format where combo and lockdown are the best routes to victory this isn't doing anything.
Her ultimate which comes 20 turns later gives you all your elves....without haste....so they die to any interaction.
Do yourself a favor and exclude Nissa from your elf decks.
Score: 0.5/100
Play this: Tier 8 Elfball decks
80: Chandra Nalaar
Poor Chandra. A vast majority of her cards are bad. Like really really bad. Nalaar in my opinion is the worst of the bunch. Yes her ult will hurt if she gets that far (She won't) but without much way to protect herself that's a pipe dream at best. She can kill creatures with her minus but only one at a time and if you're killing the biggest threat with her it's likely she will be down to very little loyalty to the point where the slightly boop will send her screaming into the graveyard.
Score: 1/100
Play this: Mono Red Burn? I don't know
79: Jace, the Living Guildpact
Fun fact. This is the only Jace that can't draw cards. You'd think hanging around Niv-Mizzet would help but no. Just look at the top 2 and throw one in the trash.
Starting at 5 loyality is decent and that ult isn't too bad. It should win you the game (Like all ults should) but you're just throwing cards in the bin to get there. His minus is...underwhelming. Bouncing a non land is a decent way of protecting him if there's only one threat on board but he can't do this twice. You could argue that he should be a little higher on this list but he would still make my shit list. 79 and 78 are both bad and shouldn't be played.
Score: 1.11/100
Play this: Brago? Maybe?
78: Chandra Pyrogenius
Oh hi Chandra...it's been a while since you poped up....
This is pretty much Chandra Nalaar if she was slightly better. Doing an amazing double damage to each opponent with her plus and 4 damage for only 3 loyalty with her minus.
Does this sound underwhelming? Now you get why Nalaar was just behind Nissa and Tibbers
Score: 2.1/100
Play this: Mono Red burn? Ugh....
77: Jace, Memory Adept
This guy is amazing....in limited.
Milling your opponents can often just be bad as graveyard shenanigans aren't uncommon in EDH. The only reason he's higher than other Garbage Jace is at least this one knows how to draw cards, granted 5 mana for a draw one isn't super but it's still better than living guildpact.
Sure the ult will draw you a ton of cards but without a way to protect himself I don't see this happening. Especially with 3 opponents against you. You should never look at a walker for his ult anyway so what we have is a 5 mana mill ten or draw one.
Pass.
Score: 2.5/100
Play this: Mill decks (You'll lose a lot)
76: BeefSlab, champion of justice
Congratulations. You have a decree of annihilation on a walker. And he can ultimate the turn right after he comes out. HOW IS HE A BAD CARD? Well...he doesn't do anything. He enters and becomes a 4/4....neat or just plus's and adds counters. If he doesn't ult he doesn't do a damn thing and in EDH planeswalkers will often not ult due to creatures being turned sideways or you know, comboing out.
Imagine you cast this guy on turn 4 and bring him to 9 loyality. Wow, you can ult soon....across the table the other player casts Ad Naseum and draws 26 cards...
Looks like you did the wrong play. The hell is wrong with you.
Score: 2.5/100
Play this: Swole ass Gideon tribal
75: Nissa, Nature's Artisan
Another case where she doesn't actually protect herself. The minus could be decent but it's just a gamble on if you hit anything. Gaining life into a massive overrun is unlikely because you're not protecting her at all and if you have a bunch of creatures to protect her with why aren't you just overrunning the same turn instead?
Score: 2.5/100
Play this: Mono green decks built with only cards from starter decks
74: Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
Do you even want to ultimate this guy? Mono red has plenty of wheel of fortune effects so that seems bad already. Then you have a plus that just does 4 damage sometimes and a minus that brings him down to one loyalty to kill something. At 5 mana you can do much better.
Score: 3/100
Play this: Mono Red Unsleeved dragons next to a bunch of beverages
73: Gideon Jura
Yet another case of when a walker is good in 60 card doesn't mean he'll be good in 100 card
Conditional removal is still better than no removal but like Sarkhan and the Beefslab before him all he does most of the time is turn into a creature and then get chump blocked. You could make creatures attack him to pick some off with bigger creatures you have but at that point you already have a better army. Play something more relevant. Or just combo or lock the board down already. Stop turning things sideways you barbarian.
Score: 3/100
Play this: Bad Aggro decks
72: Ajani Goldmane
I hear this guy was real good in Standard years ago. Not good enough to be a mythic though (This is a joke please don't make fun of me)
Again, can't protect himself. His plus is underwhelming, his minus needs you to have other critters on board to be relevant and his ult gives you a creature that just dies to everything or is chumped blocked for years. The main reason he's the lowest Ajani is his interaction with plus one counters like the other ones is on his minus rather than his plus and every other Ajani does more with their counters.
Score: 4/100
Play this: Trostani? Probably not. Atraxa and Ghave, maybe
71: Chandra Ablaze
I'm sure many of you expected Ablaze to be one of the worst and technically you're right. She does have one thing that many on this list don't though. She can protect herself with a plus and draws cards with her minus. That's actually not the worst thing in the world but at 6 mana you have much better things to do. Compare her to every other 6 mana walker and she falls behind nearly every time. Her only saving grace was poor ways to protect herself and a wheel.
And she's still one of the worst
Score 4/100
Play this: Mono red if you can't afford better wheels.
Well there you have it. The worst of the worst, the last picks.
Did I call your cards bad? I could apologize...but I'm not gonna. We have 70 more walkers to go and they're all better than these guys.
What do you guys expect to be in the top? Will it be Kaya? (No), how about Gideon 4.0 (No way)
Let me know what you think and hopefully soon we will be into the EDH all stars
Doom Blade, signing out.
Aw c'mon now, give Tibalt some credit! He can also go in Depala RW Vehicles now and can power out a turn 2 or 3 attacking Heart of Kiran!*
ReplyDeleteThat is my only defense for Tibalt. I don't know if I could even justify him in a bad RU Owling Mine-type deck that WANTS his Sudden Impact. Guess I'll have to use Stormbreath instead.
Nissa, Nature's Artisan why are you so pretty but so terrible.
Tibbers has plenty of uses. You can sell him for almost 2 dollars
DeleteThat's a solid 7 gumballs
I happen to like Gideon, Champion of Justice. I've won games with him.
ReplyDeleteOk, you can win with anyone listed here but my question is where you gonna win anyway?
DeleteLove how you describe how to play sarkhan. I think that's the perfect way to go. Dude. Spell check. Nice column.
ReplyDeleteSpelin gewd iz not my thing.
DeleteBut seriously I'm fairly bad. Need someone to edit my stuff in the future
Anime Jace is not as bad as the rest if your milling yourself. If everything is compared in/vs. combo and lock decks, you would save yourself ALOT of time by listing the very few PW (if any, cmdr teferi?) that are playable.
ReplyDeleteI don't think uncontrollable mill is good. Being able to sculpt your hand with draw/discard seems far better and if you are playing mill why not play Glimpse of the unthinkable and save yourself 3 mana?
DeleteAlso yes, a majority of the walkers are not good in competitive edh but I'm trying to find other uses for them outside of that. Someone mentioned that Ajani is decent in Atraxa now. The other 70 walkers have slots in decks. Just not in the most best decks. I think as the list goes on you'll see ones that are in tier 2 then tier 3 and so on
Nice article. When can we expect the next chapter?
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to publish at least two articles a week and working on the next installment soon. I'm busy on weekends often so Monday at latest
DeleteChandra Ablaze pulls some weight in my Feldon of the Third Path deck... pretty niche but I love her
ReplyDeleteinteresting, i have actually run ajani goldmane in an edh deck before. Though that was long before we had as many planeswalkers as we do now, honestly i could still see myself running him in marath if i played a pod variant with persist creatures.
